Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is sterile water for injection containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. It is the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilized peptides and proteins in research settings where multiple withdrawals from a single vial are required. BAC water should not be used for neonatal or intrathecal preparations due to benzyl alcohol toxicity concerns in these contexts. Mechanism of Action

Benzyl alcohol exerts bacteriostatic activity by disrupting microbial cell membrane integrity, interfering with membrane-associated metabolic processes, and inhibiting bacterial replication. At 0.9% concentration, it prevents growth of common laboratory contaminants (Staphylococcus, E. coli, Pseudomonas) without affecting the stability or bioactivity of reconstituted peptides at typical storage conditions (2-8°C, ≤28 days). Benzyl alcohol does not achieve sterilization — it suppresses growth of existing organisms rather than killing them.
